The Decals
The kit only provides decals for the Red Arrows so the Editor managed to get me some alternatives from Hannants in the form of their new Hawk Xtradecal sets, in this case X32-027 which covers early red/white hawks, red/white/blue hawks and camouflage hawks. I also got a set of their hawk stencils X32-031 which has enough stencils to allow you to do one each of the red/white scheme, the camouflage scheme, the grey scheme and the all black scheme. If you do choose to use the kit decals they are made by Cartograph and the ones I used performed flawlessly and their print quality is excellent. PICs 54, 55, 56
The Xtradecals settle down very well with some micro sol but be careful with the upper wing roundels as they fit over one of the raised vortex fins and therefore they have to be pricked with a pin to allow the fin through the decal. This fin can then be painted to match the decal afterwards. Once the decals were dry I sealed everything in with a coat of Klear and then finished off with a coat of satin varnish. The masks were then removed, the remaining clear parts were fitted and the wing tip lights were painted with Tamiya clear red and green to finish it off.
