Review by Bill Curtis
Acrylic painting is becoming more popular because of the ease of clean up, thinning with water, ability to have a high colour covering and quick drying times. This book, which is only forty two pages of A4 size is packed with information from one of the best painters in Spain.
The contents of the book takes one through:
- Materials
- Preparation of a figure
- Paints and materials
- How to handle Acrylic paint
- Basic painting with a paintbrush
- Airbrushing materials
- Basic Airbrush painting and finally
- A step-by-step of a Bronze Age Warlord c.800BC in 54mm scale.
The ‘Basic Painting with a Paintbrush’ section is sub-divided into:
- Painting eyes both 54 and 90mm
- Painting faces 54 and 90mm
- Painting cloth both green and white
- Painting metals – chainmail and helmets
- Painting leather brown and black
- Wood that covers a rifle butt and finally
- Detail painting that covers a metal clasp and a gold thread.
The airbrush section is interesting as it covers painting the skin of an 80mm Pin Up figure and also painting the trousers of a 54mm figure, the latter showing how to highlight and shadow the cloth.
Conclusions
This volume has over 200 colour photographs that illustrate all the items covered at every stage of this excellent volume. I found it very informative and easy to follow especially when using it to paint a figure. If you are new to acrylics the section on how to handle acrylic paints is a must for everyone to read and learn from.
I have other books on figure painting but I keep coming back to this volume time and again and would suggest for its price of 13.03 Euros (at time of printing) is excellent value for information from a master painter.
Very highly recommended
