Initial assessment
The Fw-190D is a favourite of mine and I must confess that I’ve been desperate to get my hands on this new kit from Eduard ever since it was announced. Eduard`s previous Focke Wulf A and F series have been criticised for being over engineered but their Hellcat series resolved these issues so it will be interesting to see how this kit goes together.
An initial look in the box showed it to contain 5 individually wrapped sprues of crisply moulded light brown plastic along with a sprue of nicely moulded clear parts. In addition the kit contains a colour photo etch covering the instrument panel and seatbelts and a sheet of pre cut masks. The instruction book is up to Eduard’s usual exceptional high standard (some other manufactures could learn a lesson or two from Eduard in this respect – Revell!!!) and the decals are both comprehensive and well printed.
Accuracy
An initial examination of the parts shows the general layout of the fuselage and wing to be quite good but others have questioned the shape of the fuselage machine gun cover – it appears to be too bulged and the general shape of the cockpit has been questioned as the top appears not to be ‘blown’ enough . Personally I have not looked too closely into these issues and tried to look at the model as a kit and it looks pretty good to me. I’m sure the aftermarket companies will produce the parts to rectify these issues if you feel you just have to have a 100% accurate Dora.
One nice part of this kit is it the undercarriage bay contains the rear of the engine which is a big failing of the Tamiya kit.
