Engine support arms
Time to clean up the two main engine support arms, one for each side of the Merlin and then paint them RAF Interior Grey-Green.
A simple dark brown oil wash enhances the raised detail. Then just attach the support arms into the two holes on each side of the engine and I used cyano for this.
Here are a few pics of the sub-assembly…

Dear Chris,
Many thanks for undertaking this build! I am one of those with one of these kits that has languished in my stash for years (or is it decades?), while I pluck up the courage to do it justice. Is there any chance you might consider finishing the aircraft in the colours of my uncle, also called James Nicolson? You will remember he was the only pilot from Fighter Command to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the whole of the Second World War, whilst flying a Hurricane at the height of the Battle of Britain, over Southampton. Aviaeology do a fantastic set of decals for his aircraft in their Vital Storm Pt. 2 package. They kindly corrected the set, adding the Red Devil image we were able to prove was carried on the Hurricane.
I do hope you do consider this as an option? I will follow the build with great excitement regardless of which scheme you build to benefit from your expert advice and experience.
With best wishes,
Jim Nicolson

Hi Jim – many thanks for your comment and interesting information.
What a great story and I would be very happy to try and get the decals to finish this model as you request. The model is destines to a chap with great interest in the type and so it seemed the ideal opportunity to finally take on the build! Leave it with me and I’ll get onto Aviaeology for a copy of the sheet.
Do stay in touch Jim, Best wishes, Geoff C.
Geoff Coughlin says
The decals Jim are shown out of stock at the moment but I’ve asked them to let me know as soon as or when they are available once more. Best wishes, Geoff
James Nicolson says
Many thanks for this response, Geoff, I’m delighted you will be finishing the model in my uncle’s colour scheme! I’d offer you my own set of the Aviaeology decals, but hope to use them on my own attempt, as I try to emulate your expertise in making the Hurricane!
Best wishes,
Jim

Once again a fantastic build full of helpful information. I’m inspired to consider a 1/24th Spitfire VB in desert scheme now…..and I don’t even have the space for one 😂

Hi would like to see some pics of the completed model was a bit of an anti climax if there’s a link I would be grateful if someone could send me it kind regards

Geoff Coughlin says
This project isn’t finished yet Stephen – a long way to go yet! GC
Stephen Todd says
Glad to hear it Geoff was getting a bit concerned lol 😂 looking forward to seeing more stages of the build cheers!
Howard Kilburn says
Beautiful camo work Geoff and I like the idea of modulating the intensity of paint to aid as a first step in weathering…. I, ve done the same on one of my practice models for the August workshop
Best wishes Howard
Geoff Coughlin says
Thanks Howard – yes it looks ok. I’ve just got the gloss varnish on today now to leave that a couple of days at least to dry rock hard (Alclad2 Gloss Kote). Cheers, Geoff

Great videos Geoff. Really helpful. Is there a technical reason why you don’t show any of the spray painting as you do it? For me, that is an area where some detailed video guidance would be invaluable. Particularly the pre- shading and subsequent mottled effect you achieved.
Geoff Coughlin says
Hi Philip
It is quite tricky to shoot the video and spray and we have quite a few videos in the TB in SMN. I will however make sure I do show more from now 😃👍 best wishes
Geoff
Philip Dendy says
Thanks Geoff. I suspected it was probably an issue of practicality. After you started this project I managed to source the 1/24th Hurricane kit and have mirrored your aftermarket parts as well. I’ll be starting my own build shortly using your excellent videos and instructions as my permanent companion. I hope I do half as good a job as you have!
Geoff Coughlin says
Thanks Philip – really appreciate that! G
Howard Kilburn says
Cracking set of videos Geoff and really impressed with the effects those AK weathering pencils can achieve
Geoff Coughlin says
Thanks Howard – in fact just had a big push to finish and there are already another 15 videos covering all the final stages!
The plan is to try and complete in SMN next week 😃
Cheers

Hi Geoff.
Just watching demonstration of weathering using aluminium AK pencil. Is the area behind the cockpit (dogbox) not made of wood and covered in canvas ?. So is not using aluminium for weathering incorrect in this area ?.
Carl
Geoff Coughlin says
Hi Carl
Good point – the rear fuselage from where you start to see the horizontal ribbing is certainly wood and shouldn’t have any aluminium chipping.
I think the area immediately around the cockpit is metal which is why I added the aluminium to those areas.
I may be wrong of course so you can become the best way to go.
Thanks d

I cannot see the pictures, just a small blue square with a white question mark, how can this be fixed?
Craige Bevil says
What a great tutorial! It is being a great help as I build this wonderful kit.
Geoff Coughlin says
And thanks for saying so Craig – really enjoyed the Hurricane and just scheduling in the big Airfix 1:24 Messerschmitt Bf109E :) Should be this year all being well :) GC
