Continuing with the flaps
Having prepared the photo-etch as per the Flightpath instructions, you have to refit the kit parts we cut from the wings, however the Airfix kit plastic is much thicker than the Italeri kit that this set is intended for and looks completely out of scale.
Solution, make new flap surfaces from stock plasticard sheet and trim to fit the photo-etch.
Be sure to leave a 2mm overlap on the outer flap trailing edge so we can add a shaped step to the upper surface. I used some 2mm square styrene for this and will sand it too profile later.
Some panel line detail is scored on both inner and outer flap surfaces that align with the corresponding structure detail and the detail on the photo-etch flap exterior.
And here you can see where I have sanded a half round profile to the trailing edge step.
I would recommend fitting the flaps to the upper wing joint areas at this stage for two reasons, firstly that we can use clamps on the flat surfaces to ensure a good join, as this would be impossible if the flap structures were pre-fitted. Secondly, so that we can take care of any tidying up of the wing edge without incurring any damage to the photo-etch detail.
As you can see, plenty of clamps are the order of the day, allowing sufficient time for the cyano glue to cure solid. The outer flap needs a little trimming where it meets the inner flap to compensate for the differences in the Airfix kit, literally 2mm was removed.
The next task is to mask off and paint the flap lower surfaces, primed with Mr Surfacer Black 1500 and top coated with our Mr Color Silver Chrome.
