I wanted the fade the paint and emphasise the wing ribs using oils. I only managed this partially and the finish I got I wasn’t what I was looking for. Following a few coats using Galeria Matt varnish, I applied small dots of different coloured oils, browns, green, yellow, red and white over the surface I’m working on. Then using a brush damp with W&N Sansodor thinners the oil is “dragged” off the surface almost completely. Sounds easy and it is easy, nowhere have I read that this is a difficult technique but for some reason I can’t seem to get the the finish I’m after. Maybe I should’ve paid my attention in my school art classes…
What I did to make myself feel better about the whole thing was the mask off the ribs on both wings and tailplanes using cut down tape. Then I gently sprayed over the masked ribs with heavily thinned Tamiya X19 Smoke, when dry removed the strips of tape. The finish was much closer to what I wanted.
