Wings (continued)
The next stage is to start filling the gaps. On the top surface I am trying to use only resin to fill it. HpH have a very good resin that is very runny and stays so for about 5 hours.
Using this, I can feed the resin into the gaps and let capillary action take it along. As it needs 24 hours to harden this has to be done and set aside.
The next day this is sanded roughly and more resin is used on top of the first coat to even it out. The gap still appears to be there because the resin is clear so you can see the black behind it.
After 4 applications, using a little less resin each time, the surface is ready to sand using finer paper with each pass. There is a very slight step on the port side which I will have one more go at. You will need to apply a coat of paint to see if it is nearing perfection!!
The starboard side is almost complete barring a small step to the aft of it. I have re-done the lines and rivets up to the step. One more sanding and that will be it.
The underside is more complex and the gap is wider. The only way to fix the starboard side is to stuff some cut and sanded plastic sheet into the gap. Then, as before, drizzle the HpH resin into the remaining gap and leave overnight.
The plastic in the gap is sanded to shape and more resin applied to level it out.
First sanding with finer papers so it is almost flush. The leading edge of the port side just about accepts resin as a filler but it needs building up.
Finally, sand it through until the finest paper is used and a coat of paint to see the result. Not too bad, just a bit of filler here and there and it will be good to go.
The tail section is complete and rivet detail reapplied.
