When I left off we had finished working in the chipping effects to the main camo colors. Now it’s time to move on to masking and painting the insignia.
Masking
For this model I turned to Maketar’s excellent kabuki tape masks. These are transferred in place in a manner that lets me apply the insignia white first. Sadly, I didn’t plan ahead very well, and I soon realized I was going to need to work the under-wing mask into position AROUND the float. So, if you plan to use masking keep this in mind.
Next I laid down the Mr. Paint Insignia white. From there these were allowed to dry, and I then covered them with their inserts from the masking sheet, removed the masking covering the blue parts and laid down that paint. Just follow Maketar’s instructions. There’s no real secret here.
Unfortunately when I bought my masking set I only got the insignia decals. Shortly after Maketar actually release a set for this kit to cover all markings, so I’d recommend that route. I was left using decals for the other odd bits: tail art, nose numbers, and walkways. Much to my surprise though the Kitty Hawk decals performed amazingly well. I honestly wouldn’t be opposed to using them on the whole kit if you’re looking to build this one.
