Tackling Airliners (Jets) Part One
The Plan…
This is the first in a new series of full build articles aimed at anyone interested in modelling civilian airliners and/or the techniques involved in building, painting and finishing them.
I’ve wanted to create this series for some time, especially as it has been many years since I last built a civilian jet airliner (really don’t ask how many!).
The plan then is to tackle a number of builds of kits from different manufacturers and try out different approaches and techniques to see which are the most convincing, to me at least, and at the same time offer you all a choice of approaches that may suit you.
Some examples of the problems, techniques and hopefully solutions across the series will include:
- how to deal with windows – especially when no clear parts are provided in the kit
- how to paint white that’s common on jet airliners so that it looks realistic and convincing
- how to make the whole model look convincing and not ‘toylike’
- decal application including tips on when to use decals and when painting might be more convincing
- preparation – why this is so essential to the finished look of your model
- other ideas and tips as we go…
This project…
As you can see, the re-release of the Revell Boeing 767-300ER in it’s special commemorative livery provides an opportunity to get the ball rolling.

Now you have got me wanting to try an airliner Geoff lol.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
Cheers

Hi James, – thanks for that. I have to say there’s something about these airliner projects that makes them a challenge for sure to me – I just don’t want them to look toy-like! We’ll see….onto the painting as we speak so a new update soon. Geoff C.

Krystal Klear leads to slightly concave windows…so you’d think adding more would help out. But I have never seen anyone do that– so maybe it doesn’t work.
Geoff Coughlin says
Hi Steve – yes that’s the problem with KK – a couple of other possibilities have popped up and I’ll have to make a decision soon – we’ll see! Thanks, G

Hello,Geoff – Superb work as always,my friend.Viewing this build does tempt me to do an airliner subject without doubt.
The ‘Xtreme’ Metals are excellent paints.
Good luck with everything at Telford this coming weekend.😊👏

Thanks Paul – done a lot on it today and may get it finished this week which would be good :)
It’s surprised me how much work there is in these subjects – a challenge but very rewarding so far.
Can’t wait for Telford :) G
