Time for greys
VIDEO DEMO
The lighter of the two greys on first and I like the look of Tamiya Royal Light Grey (RLG) (XF-80) and I guess you could also use RAF Light Aircraft Grey too that looks very similar. So that we can add the RLG there’s a lot of masking to do – a recurring theme from here on and I’m glad that I keep a lot of my used pieces of Tamiya masking tape (obviously if it’s re-usable!), and just use fresh pieces for getting neat clean edges between the colours.
The RLG covered very well, being thinned with Tamiya acrylic thinner.
A gentle Micromesh using water the next day creates a lovely smooth surface.
Plenty of masking now ready for the darker grey internal wing panels. I just picked what I thought was a good match – Tamiya Dark Sea Grey (XF-54) although this, I think is too dark…
A better choice of darker grey is Tamiya Medium Sea Grey (XF-83) and I sprayed than on.
Again, after 24 hours another Micromeshing with 8000 grade and water to get a smooth finish. Ignore the rough-looking area in the centre of the wing, this is just where the light has caught it – it really doesn’t look like that!
Time to mask up for the polished metal leading edge slats. I really like AKs Xtreme Metal enamel-based metallics and their Polished Aluminium is ideal for the job.
While the masking tape is still in situ, lightly buff the metallic areas with a soft, clean duster.

Now you have got me wanting to try an airliner Geoff lol.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
Cheers

Hi James, – thanks for that. I have to say there’s something about these airliner projects that makes them a challenge for sure to me – I just don’t want them to look toy-like! We’ll see….onto the painting as we speak so a new update soon. Geoff C.

Krystal Klear leads to slightly concave windows…so you’d think adding more would help out. But I have never seen anyone do that– so maybe it doesn’t work.
Geoff Coughlin says
Hi Steve – yes that’s the problem with KK – a couple of other possibilities have popped up and I’ll have to make a decision soon – we’ll see! Thanks, G

Hello,Geoff – Superb work as always,my friend.Viewing this build does tempt me to do an airliner subject without doubt.
The ‘Xtreme’ Metals are excellent paints.
Good luck with everything at Telford this coming weekend.😊👏

Thanks Paul – done a lot on it today and may get it finished this week which would be good :)
It’s surprised me how much work there is in these subjects – a challenge but very rewarding so far.
Can’t wait for Telford :) G
