IV./JG 54 Defence of the Reich bands – blue
I mixed what I think is a fair match for the rear fuselage and nose ring bands using Aeromaster RLM 24 and 76 and so use whatever colours you have to get a decent match. As the paints are well thinned for spraying I masked out the surrounding airframe to avoid overspray that might make the colours look odd later.
Micromesh again to make sure we eliminate any ridges between the colours…

…and the same for the 27 Gelb (Yellow) under the cowl.

I meant to drop these pics in earlier just before painting started…
Tried and trusted: strips of Tamiya masking tape around the edges of the canopy frame pushed into place with a cocktail stick and bigger bits to fill in the gaps. In this scale masking inside and out is a bit of a must in my book.
All painting done to date masked out…
And we are good to go with painting after the model is wiped down with Tamiya acrylic thinner to remove any grease and finger marks.
MRP Paints are superb (acrylic lacquers). They spray straight from the bottle and are for airbrushing only. RLM 74 Graugrun (MRP 64) and RLM 75 Grauviolett (MRP 65) are used here.
While all the paint dries onto the propeller that was sprayed Black Green and some simple chipping, wear and tear added using an ordinary graphite pencil.

The camo scheme starts to look quite good…
Leave for a couple of days and on with the gloss varnish – here a mix of Tamiya X-22 Clear (60%) and Mr Color Self-Leveling Thinner (40%). This dries well – hard, clear and glossy. All ready for decals.

Cannot Go wrong with a 190 Geoff, I am doing the Hasegawa F8 kit as Red 9. I will follow along as you build yours. Takes me back to the series of books you did back in the good old days(lol), that I used to hone my Luftwaffe model skills with.
Had to laff when you got XF22 and XF63 mixed up I am always doing that.
Cheers
James

Built this exact kit a few months back, is very nice.

Thanks Mick and James – yes really enjoying this one and it would be nice James to re-visit those older publications, especially the Luftwaffe Masterclass from Osprey – that is in serious need to bringing up to date given all the new materials and kits available – sadly the publisher didn’t seem to be interested. Hello,Geoff – An absolute masterclass and masterpiece as always, dear friend.🏆
I’ve yet to try MRP acrylic lacquers but guess that they’re similar to work with as Mr.Color ones apart from being pre-thinned.
They’re superb paints to work with and I’ve found their rapid drying time a big help when working on and handling big scale subjects.
The whole project is a joy to view and study.👏😉👍

That’s very kind of you Paul and very much appreciated. Apart from the fact that they stink to high heaven, the MRP paints are superb to work with as you say – really excellent coverage and finish. Here’s to the next one… G

Excellent build as always Geoff and the pastel shading of panel lines is great….tried it on a recent Mojo Tamiya Spitfire build around the wing to fuselage fairing and adjacent cowling panels….much easier imho than post shading with paint and easier to correct
Well done as always sir
Best wishes Howard
