On with the decals after the gloss varnish had dried thoroughly – a couple of days at least.
After a day another coat of gloss varnish to seal them in and again leave well alone to dry thoroughly.
Galleria Flat Varnish does give a very flat finish that will be ideal for the pastel weathering to follow.
The rivets we added earlier look great in my view and will look even better if we grub things up a bit.
Just taking an old soft duster that’s been used for various buffing jobs in the past is a great way to subtly distress the finish and begin to create that worn, but not trashed, look I am after.

Pastels…
These dry ‘chalky’ pastels are ideal and very flexible for adding weathering effects and I am definitely going this way these days rather than the liquid washes and so on that can work really well but can also look a bit too stark to my eye – it’s what you do with them of course that creates the end result.

I used some Tamiya red-oxide coloured paint to add some touch ups to the attachment points on the armour plating either side of the fuselage – I saw these in a rare wartime colour photo of a Fw190 and I do think that they add something to the finished look.

Cannot Go wrong with a 190 Geoff, I am doing the Hasegawa F8 kit as Red 9. I will follow along as you build yours. Takes me back to the series of books you did back in the good old days(lol), that I used to hone my Luftwaffe model skills with.
Had to laff when you got XF22 and XF63 mixed up I am always doing that.
Cheers
James

Built this exact kit a few months back, is very nice.
Geoff Coughlin says
Thanks Mick and James – yes really enjoying this one and it would be nice James to re-visit those older publications, especially the Luftwaffe Masterclass from Osprey – that is in serious need to bringing up to date given all the new materials and kits available – sadly the publisher didn’t seem to be interested. Hello,Geoff – An absolute masterclass and masterpiece as always, dear friend.🏆
I’ve yet to try MRP acrylic lacquers but guess that they’re similar to work with as Mr.Color ones apart from being pre-thinned.
They’re superb paints to work with and I’ve found their rapid drying time a big help when working on and handling big scale subjects.
The whole project is a joy to view and study.👏😉👍
Geoff Coughlin says
That’s very kind of you Paul and very much appreciated. Apart from the fact that they stink to high heaven, the MRP paints are superb to work with as you say – really excellent coverage and finish. Here’s to the next one… G

Excellent build as always Geoff and the pastel shading of panel lines is great….tried it on a recent Mojo Tamiya Spitfire build around the wing to fuselage fairing and adjacent cowling panels….much easier imho than post shading with paint and easier to correct
Well done as always sir
Best wishes Howard
