RLM 76 – MRP Paints
The blue-grey RLM 76 goes on first and it sprays beautifully and smoothly. It’s an acrylic lacquer paint (just to confuse everyone!) and it needs to be sprayed in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask too to avoid inhaling any of it. It sprays thinly and needs no thinner as it’s already pre-thinned for airbrushing (it can’t be hand-painted). The nice thing is any pre-shading or overspray from earlier helps to create some depth to the undersides and begin the lengthy process of weathering.
VIDEO DEMO
I left the model to dry thoroughly overnight – it’s touch-dry very quickly though.
A re-think is needed!
After a quick Micromesh of the undersides it occurs to me that the airframe looks too bare and so I’m going to add most of the rivets that were applied to the real aircraft. A great reference is the Airframe and Miniature book by Richard Franks and Valiant Wings Publishing – an outstanding one-stop-shop reference source for anyone building the type. Usefully it has a detailed set of plans in the back showing the location of al the rivets.
If I’d thought about this earlier I would have riveted the model before assembly – hey ho, a bit more time spent planning next time would make the riveting task much easier. I just think that adding the rivets will make a world of difference to the look of the finished model – we’ll see.

Cannot Go wrong with a 190 Geoff, I am doing the Hasegawa F8 kit as Red 9. I will follow along as you build yours. Takes me back to the series of books you did back in the good old days(lol), that I used to hone my Luftwaffe model skills with.
Had to laff when you got XF22 and XF63 mixed up I am always doing that.
Cheers
James

Built this exact kit a few months back, is very nice.

Thanks Mick and James – yes really enjoying this one and it would be nice James to re-visit those older publications, especially the Luftwaffe Masterclass from Osprey – that is in serious need to bringing up to date given all the new materials and kits available – sadly the publisher didn’t seem to be interested. Hello,Geoff – An absolute masterclass and masterpiece as always, dear friend.🏆
I’ve yet to try MRP acrylic lacquers but guess that they’re similar to work with as Mr.Color ones apart from being pre-thinned.
They’re superb paints to work with and I’ve found their rapid drying time a big help when working on and handling big scale subjects.
The whole project is a joy to view and study.👏😉👍

That’s very kind of you Paul and very much appreciated. Apart from the fact that they stink to high heaven, the MRP paints are superb to work with as you say – really excellent coverage and finish. Here’s to the next one… G

Excellent build as always Geoff and the pastel shading of panel lines is great….tried it on a recent Mojo Tamiya Spitfire build around the wing to fuselage fairing and adjacent cowling panels….much easier imho than post shading with paint and easier to correct
Well done as always sir
Best wishes Howard
