How to create and paint that magnificent scheme!
The best way to approach this task is to follow Robin`s instructions as these are based upon how he sprayed to real aircraft. First stage is a white primer all over the airframe and this is then sanded smooth using Micro Mesh. Next stage is to create an arc that will be the demarcation between the light and dark colours (sun and night sky). This is easily done with a pencil and a bit of string and once done the rear of the aircraft can be masked off. Now the painting starts with a gloss white nose. White and yellow are then mixed 50/50 and the next band is free hand sprayed followed by the pure yellow band. Next comes a mix of 50/50 yellow/light red, then pure light red and finally dark red. I mixed up pots of each of these shades as I had to go back several times to respray sections that I wasn’t happy with. I have to confess that it took me several re-sprays to get a finish I was happy with. Being enamel based paint I now left the model for 48hrs to fully dry before I even dared touch it.
Once fully dry the front arc can be hard masked off using Tamiya tape and then it’s a repeat of the spraying process but using the light grey, light blue, Roundel Blue and finally dark blue. Again it took several attempts to get it right. Once I was happy with it removing the front masked section to reveal the paint scheme was very satisfying as it looked great.
