On the home leg now
Time really to start bringing everything together and see the full effect of all the hard work.
We need to start getting some grime and weathering onto the underside – especially the back end that stains heavily, even on ‘anniversary’ aircraft! If you check out facebook there are some great photos and one in particular of the underside of this machine and I used that for reference.
What you see here is done completely with pastel chalks – various browns, greys and yellows. Your Techniques Bank has quite a lot on how I do all this.
Finishing off that back end…
The metallic areas are further weathered using pastels and also some ordinary pencil graphite applied with a cotton bud. Dark grey pastels stippled onto the undersurfaces of the stabilisers and rear fuselage to represent spotty deposits give a convincing look to this area I think.
The grey panel lines are slightly enhanced by using a slightly darker grey than the base colour – just carefully ‘painted’ along the panel lines – just take your time and build this effect up gradually.
Undercarriage…
Invariably when the Phantom II is parked, locking jacks are fitted around the retraction units to prevent accidental retraction and I wanted to add these – they are easy to manufacture by simply adding small lengths of fuse wire (3-4) sections for each part. Then just paint them red and add some weathering and also RBF tags for completeness. I think the effect looks good (see pics here and on the final shots).
I also sanded flats on the tyres and added brake lines to the legs. The main omission from all F-4 kits that I’m aware of is the metallic rod that stick up behind each leg at about 45 degrees. I added these from thick wire. Some stencils were also added from coloured metal foil. A little oil wash added some depth to finish. The legs click into place very well so it should be easy to get all the legs at the correct angles.

Hey, thanks Paul. Right in the middle of decaling now and what a scheme – I never thought I’d make a model with such striking markings – incredible! That will all be in the next update and I reckon you need to allow 3-4 long sessions at the bench to get through the decaling stage – I’ve only just added all the large ones and lots of small ones now! You’re more than welcome,my friend.I love all the ‘special schemes’ worn on the JASDF Phantoms with just one exception and that’s the ‘Digital’.I know that’s just my personal opinion and whether it’s the colour combination used I’m not sure.
That said,I must admit it’s very striking to the eye.

I recently joined, mainly to see what phantoms are being built. I have a couple of ZM phantom kits and the cockpit detail seems really good. What’s the rationale to using the Eduard PE?

Hi Toby – the eduard PE gives you the canopy detail as that’s basic on the kit parts. You also need a seat harness as that’s not included. Apart from that I just added some eduard RBF tags (1:72 scale is more realistic). Apart from that just some scratched detail for all the wiring behind the seats. A fair representation is provided in the kit for behind the RIO but plenty to go in behind the pilot. Cheers, Geoff

Thanks very much for your kind words here – it’s really appreciated. As you say, It’ll be great to get my hands on the new Tamiya F-4B that’s due our I think in June 2021 – can’t wait for that! I’ll prioritise that build as soon as it comes in so everyone won’t have long to see just how good it is. And again Steve, you’re right, it will have to be out of the top drawer to be on a par with this ZM kit – Oh I do love a competition between manufacturers :) GC

Fantastic build and video! just managed to pick up this kit for a decent price, going to stick to plan and build my 1/48 Meng F-4G first but this kit is quite an exciting prospect!
Definitely something to look forward too this winter!
