Prep for the decals
I had decided to use the kit decals, so out came the gloss varnish. I had some Humbrol Clear which I had not used before and decided to try it out. The liquid is like water and does not need thinning so after a good shake I allowed the bubbles to subside before pouring into the airbrush cup. I adjusted the spray pressure to read eighteen p.s.i. and then sprayed a light coat all over the model allowing, before putting the parts aside for thirty minutes, which is the recommended time to allow it to dry.
On my return I found the varnish had dried to a strange mottle finish. I used a hair drier to make sure it was fully cured and applied another light coat and got the same results.
I am at a loss to explain this and am not sure whether the varnish or I am at fault. A cup of tea and the decision to use Vallejo’s Satin Varnish, thinned with a water / thinner mix and sprayed at fourteen P.S.I. which had worked almost hiding the strange pattern. I don’t think this will be detrimental and it may even enhance the weathering but only time will tell.
