At this point I gave the model a coat of Tamiya Clear Coat thinned with Mr Color Levelling thinner. After knocking over what was left of my Micro Sol all over my work bench! I decided to supplement the Micro Sol with Mr Mark Setter. I know this is really their version of Micro Set, but experience has shown that this stuff is really strong and with the application of heat from a hair-dryer proved to be more than enough to get the Meng decals to settle nicely.
Next, I painted the rivet heads with the lightened mixture of the main colour.
After another application of Clear Coat I mixed up a heavy mixture of Abteilung Brown wash and thinners. This was applied with a flat brush and allowed to dry for 15 to 20 minutes.
Using the same cleaned wide flat brush and dipped in clean thinners and wiped on a paper towel, the wash is steadily wiped-off, drawing the brush from top to bottom again with the emphasis on the centre of the panel. Until you’re satisfied with the result.
Paynes Grey is used for the panel lines and a pin wash for all the raised detail.
AK Rust Streaks are applied in small dots on a previously thinners dampened background and is then drawn in a downward movement of the brush to form a streak of rust. The beauty of this technique is that if you’re not happy with the first results you can simply wipe it off and start again.
The wheels have been fitted to the axles prior to the body fit. Care has to be taken when fitting the wheels as they’re a tight fit and you must resist the temptation to push them on with the edge of the tyres. This could result in the spokes collapsing through the centre of the wheel! Push gently in the centre of the hub if needs be.
The running board brackets need a little persuasion to sit correctly whilst the glue dries.
Pinnacles Medium Brown Earth is used around the lower part of the vehicle and dusted in to the cracks and crevices in the cargo area. A final spray of thinned Hannants Matt Varnish seals everything in and leaves a nice realistic sheen.
