The windows both in the door and in the wall were made from Evergreen styrene strip, the door is 1mm strip, and this took some time to do as it was extremely fiddly, I cut several pieces and a lot of them have disappeared, when I cut thru them, an age old problem when cutting small items off, of plastic sprues… HOLD ONTO BOTH PIECES!
I started by adding the frame on to the door, this was taped into place, I then made up a scale drawing of the window design this was then waxed with a single household candle, (not a fork handle) I then started to cut out the design, this was glued together in place, on the waxed piece of card, the wax prevents the paper/card from sticking to the glue and plastic.
Debris
I wanted some debris on the footpath, such as household items that had either been blown out or had been thrown out on to the street, so three crates had been made up, these will be painted to look like wood, although one is textured the other two aren’t, the one with the wire around the top as a type regularly used for transporting fruit and vegetables. The wire is to be replaced with some finer gauge of wire before painting begins; it’s only when you see things in photos that you realise that things may be wrong.
I also made a chair that once was inside the café, this is made up of .32 gauge brass wire soldered together being bent over a plastic tube to shape it, the inner wire was bent over a knife handle, as it had a smaller diameter. The seat frames were bent around a Vallejo paint pot, I wrapped it round twice as I required two rings for the chair – one for the seat, and one for the leg support, the rings are then cut and soldered together. Each of the legs had a slight curve to them created by holding each end between my finger and thumb and bending it over the back of my left hand.
I held it together with masking tape, this held the two back stays together, once this was achieved I soldered the seat in place, I held this in place with Haemostats, locking scissors used in surgery handy little tools if you can get hold of them. The rest of the detritus is made up of kitty litter and bits and pieces of broken up plaster mouldings, and off cuts from previous bases.
