This shows the stages that the painting and weathering went through. The first image shows a “new” surface with just a few chips exposing the primer.
A general wash of black and brown oil paints has been applied in the second pic. I don’t think the real paint work suffered much from anything other than a coat of dust and mud in the short time they were in service – mind you there is nothing to stop one producing a really beaten up one. The young drivers certainly ran into a lot of German objects on their way through!
Dust and a film of mud/dust are applied with Mig Europe Dust mixed with white spirit. I had applied a coat of future before this and then hairspray. When the hairspray had dried I exposed, very lightly, the base paint again to give the surface a bit of texture

Barrel in, stains applied and the interior of the engine compartments painted and weathered. All that remains is to matt coat the mantel.
