Assembly…
I was busy building another kit when I got struck down with a very nasty chest infection which wouldn’t shift. As I struggled with the build and was making mistakes, I thought: “Enough of this and lets find an easy small build”.
So I decided on the Tamiya/Italeri kit for the L6/40 tank.
After a study of the build plan, I got underway with Stage 1 which is the assembly of the lower hull. This is made up from flat plates. I made sure these were assembled square and then moved onto the second stage which covers the internal parts, the drive final drive unit, seat and steering handles. Clamps were used to hold the hull tub together in these stages.
Stage three and four are the wheel assemblies and each of these has about eleven parts which were built up and then attached to the hull tub. Also the drive sprockets, idlers and return rollers are added.
The fifth stage covers the track assembly, which is of the link and length type. The instructions start with attaching the single links round the drive sprocket but I started with the long run on the bottom length.
I then made up the single links to go round the drive sprocket and this is where I found that they didn’t fit. I started by cutting down the teeth but this didn’t work either, so I then decided to cut off the offending teeth and folded the single links round the wheel and fix it in place with liquid glue.
I then fixed the top run followed by the single links round the idler wheel and joined it to the bottom run of track. Apart from the drive sprocket this went together very easily with a little care lining up the various parts.
