Once rubbed down the marks acted as a guide for the WEM replacement parts for the platform. The pipes on the model were made from fine round Evergreen plastic strip. I also removed the moulded supports on the platforms; this was replaced with fine plastic strip (Evergreen). I then assembled the lower parts of the super structure kit parts B-25 (forward section the Bridge sits on) and part B-1 & B-12. With these glued together I marked out the missing scuttles before finely drilling them out using a 0.5mm drill bit in a twist drill. I then marked the positions of the various doors and hatches and ladders. At this point I only attached the doors leaving the ladders until this assembly was glued to the hull. On the top of Kit part B-25 is four “blobs” that is meant to represent light anti aircraft guns, these were removed using a bur fitted in a mini drill. Some replacement photo etch examples were fitted in place later in build (they are NOT in the detail set but were made from photo etch 20mm Oerlikon guns – minus shields from parts left over from KGV detail set). This assembly was then glued to the hull part. Next I added the remaining details using either kit parts or replacements. In the case of the Main mast Kit parts A-43 and B-5; these are platforms within the structure of the Mast support legs. The parts themselves weren’t replaced but the Bulwarks (raised wall around edge of part) is far too thick and was carefully thinned down using a dental bur in a mini drill (as shown in photographs) to thin the walls down. This was done whilst the parts were still attached to the part sprue.
The Main Mast Starfish platform supplied in the kit is reasonably well detailed but was replaced by the example in the detail set. By carefully removing all the “Starfish” parts from the etch sprue without detaching the supports. Now remove one of the supports and attach it into the appropriate groove etched into the underside of platform part, the supports are adjacent to the area of the platform that they fit, hence why I didn’t remove them individually from sprue. Once complete the platform was glued into place on top of kit partsA-24 & A-29, making sure it is level and square relative to ship. Still working on the mast, next up was the Boat crane jib part A-28, it attaches near base of fore leg of Main Mat part A-29. Do not glue this yet but attach it loose. Now remove the large etch part 2 Crane rigging and glue it in place so it points just to either left or right of Funnel structure. Then taking the kit jib part A-28 lift it up to receive the rigging and glue into place together. I also replaced the lower yard arm part A-30 with a piece of fine brass rod. This was cut to fit the photo etch and glued to the back of the part to strengthen and bulk out the etched flat example. This was done with the remaining yardarms before they were glued into place on the Mast.
With the lower section of the Main Mast complete I cut some brass rod with a more in scale diameter using the kit parts as templates for length of part. These were glue together, and then the vertical ladders were glued into place followed by the yardarms. Once dry the whole assembly was glued into pace on the Star fish platform using the hole etched into the base to pass the part through, it sits on a ledge just under the platform made from the join of the lower legs of the mast.
