IJN Tone was the lead ship in the two-vessel Tone-class of heavy cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
It was named after the Tone River, in the Kant region of Japan and was completed on 20 November 1938 at Mitsubishi’s Nagasaki shipyards. Tone was designed for long-range scouting missions and had a large seaplane capacity.
She was extensively employed during World War II usually providing scouting services to their aircraft carrier task forces. She almost always operated in this capacity in conjunction with her sister ship Chikuma.
This publication contains:
- 82 pages, 137 renders, double-sided A2 sheet of the plans of the ship
- Format (size): A4 (210×297 mm)
As you can see from the stats above, this is an impressive publication.
This 3-D approach is becoming very popular and, when you look at the quality and breadth of the all-colour drawings inside, you begin to appreciate just what an immensely valuable resource this title is. Put that with the stunning scale line drawings/plans and it becomes increasingly hard to ignore.

I am the first to admit that I am not a maritime modeller, but we have some great guys who are associated with SMN and it would be great to think that, in time, we may be able to feature the IJN Heavy Cruiser Tone in model form.
Working my way through the high quality pages the multiple-angle approach to the vessel’s coverage began to make me feel like I was actually walking around the ship!
This volume will offer maritime modellers a great deal in terms of accurate content and help, especially when it comes to accurate placement of details like the rigging and other aspects of the project.
The latter is something that is frequently lacking in kit instructions, so this volume will become a ‘must-have’ for sure.
Highly Recommended.
