The Scimitar is a variant of the Scorpion light armoured reconnaissance vehicle by Alvis Vehicles Limited of the United Kingdom. The first deliveries were made to the British army in 1974, it was to see service with the Belgium and Honduras army’s also. There were 486 Scimitars produced.
Scimitar has the hull and turret design as the Scorpion but is armed with a newly developed 30mm RARDEM cannon. Which is capable of firing HE HEI-T AP APDS-T and PRAC-T ammunition of British, Swiss, US. The normal firing mode of RARDEM cannon is in rapid single shots but when required it has a maximum burst rate of 6 rounds. The spent cartridges are automatically ejected outside of the turret. The max range of the cannon is about 4000m with 165 rounds of ammunition being carried by the scimitar.
The other specifications of the Scimitar are similar to the Scorpion. There are three crew members in the Scimitar which is powered by a Jaguar J600 No.1 Mk.100 B4.2 litre petrol engine delivering 190bhp at 4750 rpm with the power-to-weight ratio at 24.5 bhp/t. The Scimitar has a simple but highly reliable torsion bar suspension system. Its max road speed 80.5 kph and max road range is 644 km.
Opening the box you will find you have 6 sprues with very crisp detailing, 1 photo-etched sheet, a brass barrel and decal sheet for 5 different vehicles. Having a look though the instructions they look clear and easy to follow.
For source of information I used New Vanguard (13) Scorpion reconnaissance vehicle 1972-1994, British Army Equipment by Peter Gudgin and the internet.
After looking though the box, checking a few thing out in a couple of books, British Army Equipment by Peter Gudgin and New Vanguard (13) Scorpion reconnaissance vehicle 1972-1994, also looking at images on Google, I decide how I am planning to finish this model.
