Initial assessment…
This is Eduard’s ‘Weekend Edition’ of their excellent Fokker Dr1. For those of you not familiar with these ‘Weekend’ kits they are basically the standard kit but have no PE (Photo Etch) and only one decal option. If you are looking for a quick and cheap build then these are the kits for you.
The kit itself comes in Eduard’s usual nice packaging with an `action` shot of the decal option on the front. On opening the box you have several sprues of light brown plastic, a small decal sheet and an A5 instruction sheet. The quality of the moulding is up to Eduard’s usual standard with little or no flash and the decals are in register.
Initial dry fitting shows a good fit and the surface of the plastic has a nicely refined texture to simulate the fabric covering. One thing that does hit you when you dry fit the kit is how small it is – if you have a storage problem these are the kits for you!!
One other nice thing about the kit is if you fancy trying a WW1 aircraft but the rigging is putting you off along with the wing alignment then this is a great kit to start with. There is very little rigging and the wing fit to the fuselage is solid and doesn’t require and form of jigging in order to get the fit symmetrical. After my Bristol Fighter build this kit looks a breeze.
Overall an excellent introduction to WW1 aircraft at a very competitive price.
Highly recommended
