A little bit of inspiration and reference here…
Thanks David G…
You have to thank David G one of our many Facebook Friends who acquired this model and shared his knowledge on our SMN Facebook page, drawing our attention to its very existence! This model doesn’t feature in Revell’s 2012 catalogue or advance orders schedule so great stuff David – I’ll see if we can include this one in the build schedule. In any event do send pics in of your build for the Gallery if you get to it before we do…
Reference…
Your SMN Photo Reference Library has no less than 3 huge internal and external walkarounds for the Sea King. Admittedly not the Mk.41 but mane of the features and fitting are the same so worth taking a good look at those and downloading what you want in order to complete your Sea King model.
The raised rivet detail so typical of the Sea King exterior fuselage is very well captured in 1:72 scale, visible yet not overdone – no mean feat of tooling so great work here Revell. As you can see on the following two images of a Royal Navy Sea King HU5 the rivets are visible and worth a subtle weathering job on your model.
The Revell Kit…
This is another impressive package from Revell – a re-release of the 1998 kit (from the date stamp on the sprues) plus new decals. The 4 main grey sprues feature recessed panel lines – looking restrained in this scale plus a look and feel of high quality moulding with parts crisp and sharp. Some sprues are marked as HAS 6 so it’s logical that you can make that variant of the type as well. In fact Sea Skua missiles are also included plus intake guards and radome to allow for different versions to be completed if you can source decals from elsewhere
Box and contents…
The Revell box artwork is usually impressive enough and that’s the case here – an image of a German Marine Sea King Mk.41 sporting the incredible 45 Years of SAR special anniversary markings.
Let’s go inside…
The grey sprues are packaged well and no damage is apparent. Taking the main components first, they are well tooled, recessed panel line detail and having a quality feel, and not too heavy for the scale as I’ve said. No distortion was apparent and a dry fit of the fuselage promises a decent fit; the initial impression is one of a lot of detail parts that will go to make up an impressively large model in 1:72 scale. The options for the interior are impressive with various seating layouts and immediately. I haven’t built this kit before, but it looks good from the parts supplied. The whole of the interior is impressive with textured floor and seating as above.
Cockpit and interior…
These are definite highlights of the model with: bulkheads, seats, floor and crew seating all well detailed. The option of an open the rear cabin door revealing the detailed interior is also a positive feature. Decals are available on the decal sheet to add to the instrument panels in the cockpit, although the raised detail is impressive.
Engine intakes…
Again some impressive compressor blade detail is apparent and the dust filer box protectors that fit in front will look good, even if they obscure the fan detail. So, depending on how you want to finish your model the filter may or may not need to be fitted.
Undercarriage units…
Impressively detailed units are supplied that will be highly visible on your finished model – as is typical of the type.
Stores…
The main items included are the Sea Skua anti-ship missiles X4 that fit onto separate pylons located near each sponson with two per side..
