The Revell Kit
This is a great re-release by Revell of an enormous scale model – so, if you like your models large, then this one’s for you for sure! It measures 63.4cm long by 50.3cm wide – fantastic!
Box and contents
The light grey sprues are packaged well in the usual poly bag and no damage is apparent. Taking the main components first, they are cleanly moulded with little sign that this isn’t a new kit. Very little excess plastic flash is apparent and no distortion on the larger components or smaller items. I like the ribbed effect on the wings – neatly done.
Overall shape looks good for a BV222 with fuselage and wings representing well the shape and design of the original.
Detail sprues
The components feature recessed panel lines that are cleanly engraved creating a good scale effect, especially given the size of the model.
The cockpit is fairly well appointed with internal ribbing, seats, instrument panel etc but, to be honest, you really aren’t going to see a whole lot in here when your model is finished, so what’s provided is fine. A large decal instrument panel is provided.
Other details and highlights include the detailed engines – one of which can be displayed open revealing the engine within the cowl.
This model is really all about size for me and if you can get creative, setting your finished model off in some kind of seascape or water base. Add to that some subtle or not so subtle weathering and you could have a real show-stopper on your hands.
Clear parts
The clear parts are just that, clear and blemish-free.
Instructions
The Revell instructions follow their usual exploded stages format. Location of parts is clear but colour paint coding is for Revell paints only. However, the colour names are provided and this will help you to match your own choice of paints. Two schemes are offered for BV222 aircraft:
- BV 222, V1, S1 , LTS 222-See, Mediterranean Sea, 1942-43
- BV 222, V2, X4+BH , SAGr.130, Norway 1944-45
Decals
The decals seem good, being newly created and manufactured. Certainly colour saturation and register is good and all markings are accurate and sharp in their detail. This is a strong part of the package; good quality decals will make a world of difference to your completed model.
Conclusion
Basically, if you are into large-scale modelling then this kit is definitely worth a look.
