Check out the Techniques Bank for how to create a realistic base for your models…
Thanks to Just Bases for the review samples (www.just-bases.co.uk)
Just Bases certainly seemed to be doing brisk trade at this year’s IPMS (UK) Scale ModelWorld – Telford. This excellent company provides a very personal service and when I asked around the club, many modellers are already using these great bases. Paul and Tony make it clear that just about anything is possible and they will happily custom make most types of bases. Having said that, there are many different styles and sizes to choose from, so your decision on what to buy is easy.
Plain MDF bases in different shapes are readily available: oval, irregular, sunken-framed bases and many more styles are all in the range. You will see Les Venus’ awesome 1:32nd scale Israeli F-4E ‘Kurnass’ on one of these in the not too distant future, so keep an eye out for that!
Perspex cases are very popular will all sorts of military scale modellers (plus others of course) and we will be using one of these for a forthcoming maritime project by Matt Barron, again watch this space.
This final image shows just how nice the plinth ‘bases’ are – made from mahogany or oak, they look genuinely beautiful and will set off any type of figure or bust very well indeed.
Verdict
Highly recommended to every scale modeller. We spend a lot of time in our club making and finishing our models and if you managed to get to Telford this year, or any other show for that matter – just look at the display tables and you tell me which ones look the best? Those on base or those without?
