Detail painting applied
After drying and removal of all masking tape the detail painting was applied, for the steel decks I used Humbrol Matt 27 Sea Grey and for the wooden deck areas Humbrol 93 Desert Yellow. For the anti-slip walkways I used Vallejo Model Colour 70988 Khaki, below is list of items painted other than white:
Vallejo Model Colour70.950 Black – Funnel Cap, Steam Pipe, interior of lower Bridge, Anchor Chains and steam winch (anchor chains go around it), Stove Pipe on aft superstructure top of , Pulleys on davits.
Vallejo Model Colour 70957 Flat Red – Life Rings two of on railings above aft superstructure
Vallejo Model Colour 70.884 Stone grey – Applied to hose on hose reels
Vallejo Model Colour 70.862 Black Grey – Applied to Hedgehog bomblets on launcher, and shells of ready use 4 inch ammunition.
After leaving a good 24 hours to dry the parts were sprayed in Vallejo Gloss varnish, this is to protect and seal enamel paints from turps based washes later on and also provide a good bonding surface for the decals. The decals were applied using Daco Products Strong decal setting solution. After drying the model parts were re sprayed but this time in Vallejo Matt varnish.
Weathering
I started this by applying by hand using fine tipped brush three colours from the Vallejo Model Colour range, 70985 Hull Red, 70818 Red Leather and 70.862 Black Grey. These were applied to look like paint chips, rust spots etc. especially around waterline and forward to mid-section of the Hull as on actual vessels these areas were particularly prone to paint wear and peeling.
Next a wash of Raw Umber artist oil paint thinned with substitute turps was applied over all parts, carefully removing excess amounts of wash. On the sides of hull and super structure the wash excess was removed with up and down strokes to leave behind faint staining of where water would run off the vessel. Finally I went around picking in streaks of Raw Umber and Burnt Sienna (rust) to the outer plating and anchors on the hull to give impression of weathering streaks. After all was dry I fitted the lower bridge window glazing into place using Formula 560 canopy glue.
With this complete I can now move onto building the remaining parts which will be painted and weathered as above before being attached to hull.
